NIL/TU,O Child and Family Services
In
1994/95, representatives of Five First Nations’ Beecher Bay,
Pauquachin, Songhees, Tsartlip, and Tsawout met to start the
long process of restoring authority and responsibility for
caring for our children.
The
First Nations, Federal and Provincial Governments, worked as a
tripartite working group to begin the transfer of authority for
child and Family Services to the agency incorporated in 1997.
The occasion was marked by the Member Nations signing a
Memorandum of Understanding with the Provincial Director of the
Ministry for Children & Families.
By the
end of 1999 social workers were hired and preparation was
underway for Level 12 Delegation.
With the addition of
T’sou-ke and Pacheedaht First Nations, there now are 7 First Nations communities
serviced by NIL/TU,O Child & Family Services.
Currently we are operating
at Level 12 Delegation with some staff now trained in Level 13
delegation.
